On Friday December 30th a group of well-wishers met downtown to celebrate Elmer Santerre’s official last day at Elmer’s Barbershop. Select Board chair Kermit Williams read two proclamations which had been spearheaded by second-generation customer Bob Edwards. The first was an official commendation signed by Governor Chris Sununu, and the second a declaration signed by State House Speaker Sherman Packard to recognize Elmer’s dedication to the community and service in the Navy during the Korean War. Also on hand were the Wilton Police and Fire Departments who blared their sirens down Main Street as they saluted Elmer.
On September 2, 1958 Elmer settled in the Monadnock Region after newly discharged from the Navy and opened his barbershop. Over the next 64 years, Elmer served thousands of customers, many of whom were second or third-generation clients.
Elmer is currently looking to rent the space as a functional one-chair barbershop, with a good existing clientele. Anyone interested should call Elmer at 603-654-2840.
